All interested TalTech academic staff are welcome to attend the first seminar of this academic year on Wednesday, 19 November at 15:00-16:30, in SOC-311. This session will be led by Prof. Sander Rikka, Senior Researcher at the Division of Modeling and Remote Sensing (Department of Marine Systems), who will give a talk titled: “Estimation of Surface Waves in the Baltic Sea from Satellite Imagery”.
Estimating ocean waves from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data have been an active area of research for decades, as waves play an important role in both weather and ocean forecasting. Satellite missions like Sentinel-1 provide a large-scale, continuous view of the sea surface, offering valuable data for this purpose. In their work, the Division of Modeling and Remote Sensing apply neural networks to estimate one-dimensional wave density spectra from Sentinel-1 SAR image spectra in the Baltic Sea, combining satellite observations with modern machine learning techniques to better understand sea state conditions.
Following the talk there will be a Q&A and networking over coffee and light snacks. The talk part of the seminar will also be broadcast via Teams, but we encourage you to participate in person to take part of the interesting and valuable discussions stemming from the topic. The talk will be held in English.
This seminar will also mark the restart of our monthly AI research open seminar series. Each seminar will feature a different TalTech research group presenting their work, followed by time for informal discussions and networking over coffee and snacks. These gatherings are designed to bring together TalTech’s AI community, encourage collaboration, and increase visibility of ongoing research across the university.
