At TalTech\u2019s development conference, participants reflected on the recently concluded strategic period and discussed the university\u2019s ambitions for 2026\u20132035. The joint message from the rectorate was clear: TalTech is moving forward as a more influential, more international university of technology with a stronger contribution to societal development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the key topics that emerged at the conference was artificial intelligence. In the new development plan, digitalisation and the advancement of AI are identified as one of the three major societal challenges to which TalTech aims to contribute. This gives AI a clear place in the university\u2019s long-term strategy: AI is not a side project, but part of how TalTech teaches, conducts research, strengthens collaboration with industry and the public sector, and develops its internal processes.<\/p>\n

TalTech\u2019s AI roadmap provides a shared direction<\/strong><\/p>\n

The AI focus areas presented by Rector Tiit Land reflect TalTech\u2019s approach well. The roadmap is built around four directions: awareness and skills, AI adoption, ethics and responsibility, and AI development and contribution to society.<\/p>\n

These focus areas show that TalTech approaches AI holistically. The university must develop AI literacy across the entire university community, integrate AI thoughtfully into teaching, research, management, and support processes, and ensure its ethical and responsible use. At the same time, TalTech also has an important role as an AI developer and societal partner.<\/p>\n

AI is therefore not only a technological issue. It affects learning, research, leadership, collaboration, and organisational culture, and it requires new skills, open-minded thinking, and a willingness to learn throughout the organisation.<\/p>\n

In education, AI is an accelerator of change<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Ingrid Pappel focused her presentation on what TalTech\u2019s education should look like during the next development period. Her message was that TalTech\u2019s societal responsibility is to educate engineers, technology specialists, and leaders who are capable of understanding, commissioning, managing, and implementing technological solutions. Key themes included challenge-based learning, learner-centred education, internationalisation, AI, and transferable skills.<\/p>\n

One central idea was that students should be able to focus on learning rather than understanding the system itself. When curricula feel fragmented, feedback arrives too late, and support does not reach learners in time, some talent remains unrealised. AI can help make learning clearer and better supported.<\/p>\n

The Vice Rector also described a broader direction of change: the current model is often content-centred, uniform, and separated by disciplines; the future of education must become more challenge-based, personalised, interdisciplinary, and supported by continuous feedback. AI is one of the mechanisms that can help bring about this transformation.<\/p>\n

Challenge-based learning requires new ways of working<\/strong><\/p>\n

Challenge-based learning will play an important role in the future of education at TalTech. Real-world problems do not fit neatly within the boundaries of a single discipline. The green transition, digitalisation, security, energy, and AI all require collaboration across fields. Therefore, learning must connect technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, the public sector, and societal challenges.<\/p>\n

AI can amplify this kind of learning by supporting analysis, prototyping, simulations, and feedback. It helps connect learning more closely with real-world problems while preserving the central role of the learner, the lecturer, and their meaningful collaboration.<\/p>\n

AI will not replace lecturers. Instead, it helps lecturers focus on where the human role is most valuable: mentoring, discussion, learning design, and meaningful feedback. The goal is less routine work and more high-quality teaching.<\/p>\n

The first steps have already been taken<\/strong><\/p>\n

TalTech is not starting from scratch in adopting AI. Over the past year, the foundation has already been laid: more than 750 people have participated in AI training sessions and workshops; 18 AI champions workshops have been organised for academic staff and 10 introductory ChatGPT training sessions for all interested participants; nearly 1,900 users have adopted ChatGPT Edu; and more than 35 use cases and development ideas have been collected.<\/p>\n

These steps demonstrate that AI is no longer merely a topic for individual experimenters at TalTech. A university-wide framework for learning, experimentation, and responsible adoption is beginning to take shape. The next step is to move from isolated tools and experiments toward shared practices, successful use cases, and scalable solutions.<\/p>\n

TalTech is shaping the age of AI<\/strong><\/p>\n

The AI message of the development conference can be summarised simply: TalTech is not merely adapting to the age of AI \u2014 it is helping shape it.<\/p>\n

This means stronger support for learners, stronger graduates, a smarter university, and greater impact for Estonia. AI is a capability that helps TalTech provide high-level research and education, develop future talent, and contribute to the development of Estonia\u2019s economy and society.<\/p>\n

Technology is evolving rapidly, and not all answers are yet known. That is precisely why it is important for TalTech to move forward consciously, boldly, and responsibly \u2014 while remembering that AI must serve education, research, work, and society in a smart and trustworthy way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
