In each course, the permitted use of artificial intelligence (hereafter AI) may differ, and below are some general principles. Always follow the lecturer\u2019s instructions in the extended syllabus, and if there are no guidelines on AI, ask the lecturer beforehand whether and how AI use is allowed.<\/p>\n<h2>Artificial intelligence and academic integrity<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Your work must be your own<\/strong><br \/>\nEvery assignment you submit must be written by you and based on your own ideas. You are responsible for its content.<br \/>\nWriting is part of learning \u2013 it helps you develop critical thinking and personal understanding. If someone (or something) does the work for you, you miss out on that development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How can AI support you?<\/strong><br \/>\nArtificial intelligence can help with planning, organising ideas, or editing texts.<br \/>\nFor example, you may ask: \u201cHelp me structure an argument,\u201d \u201cSuggest sample sentences,\u201d or \u201cHow can I argue more effectively?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>What should you keep in mind?<\/strong><br \/>\nRead the extended syllabus for course-specific guidelines. Lecturers may allow or prohibit AI use for particular assignments and graded activities. If you\u2019re not sure, always ask.<br \/>\nIf AI use is prohibited, you must follow that rule \u2013 it\u2019s not just regulation, it supports your learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be honest<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you used AI for support, indicate it in your work \u2013 for example, in the methodology section (\u201cI used AI to structure ideas\u201d).<br \/>\nDo not present AI-generated text as your own. That is academic misconduct, even if the text seems \u201conly slightly\u201d modified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Good habit: start by yourself<\/strong><br \/>\nWrite your own draft first \u2013 this helps clarify your thoughts.<br \/>\nUse AI only later, for improving the work if needed: for example, to strengthen arguments or add perspectives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Use of AI<\/h2>\n<p>What AI can do and how it can support you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helps to understand the topic \u2013 explains complex concepts and answers questions in simple language.<\/li>\n<li>Provides personal support \u2013 adapts responses to your level and needs.<\/li>\n<li>Supports brainstorming \u2013 offers new ideas, perspectives, and creative approaches.<\/li>\n<li>Analyses data \u2013 helps interpret datasets and draw conclusions.<\/li>\n<li>Creates new content \u2013 produces texts, images, scenarios, and visuals.<\/li>\n<li>Gives critical feedback \u2013 helps identify the strengths and weaknesses of ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Adapts learning materials \u2013 adjusts content to suit learners of different levels.<\/li>\n<li>Edits texts \u2013 improves language use, clarity, and logic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What to be cautious about when using AI:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always check the results. AI output may seem reliable, but it can contain errors, inaccuracies, \u201challucinations,\u201d or fabricated sources.<\/li>\n<li>AI may be biased. Answers can reflect stereotypes or prejudices present in the data.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive reliance on AI can hinder development. Learning requires active thinking \u2013 AI should not replace the acquisition of your analytical and creative skills.<\/li>\n<li>Do not enter personal data, sensitive information, or copyright-protected content. Such content may go beyond your control and violate data protection as well as intellectual property requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Awareness and skills<\/h2>\n<h3>Introductory course for students on the use of artificial intelligence<\/h3>\n<p>To better understand artificial intelligence, be sure to take the introductory course for students:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/moodle.taltech.ee\/course\/view.php?id=35369\" class=\"button size-medium color-blue\" target=\"_blank\">Open course<\/a>\n<h2>Tools<\/h2>\n<p>At the university, students can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/m365.cloud.microsoft\/chat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">web version of Microsoft Copilot<\/a> with their UNI-ID account. When using Microsoft Copilot with a UNI-ID account, all entered data is protected and kept in a secure and isolated environment. This ensures that user data is not used for model training, does not leave the organisation, and is not visible to other users. The service complies with the data protection and confidentiality requirements applicable to educational institutions and public sector organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Below are examples of other tools that can be used in different fields. All generative AI tools display some degree of national bias, as they are based on content and sources created in certain countries. However, Deepseek AI stands out for its deliberate bias \u2013 certain topics are restricted in line with government policy, making this tool potentially unreliable as a source of information. For example, the Australian government has raised concerns about Deepseek\u2019s privacy policy \u2013 the platform collects users\u2019 personal data (e.g. phone number, date of birth, IP address) and stores it on servers in China. Other AI tools may also collect personal data, which is why you should always pay close attention to the information you share in conversations.<\/p>\n<h2>Environmental impact<\/h2>\n<p>The development of AI models and the processing of queries require a great deal of energy. Every time a query is made, electricity is consumed in servers, and additional energy is used to store and archive copies of queries (computationally, one query is estimated to cost about a litre of clean water).
